According to the world economic forum report, by 2030, 42% of the world´s youth will be Africans. At least one hundred million young people will enter the labour market by 2030. SDG4 aims to “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all“. Education opposes poverty and fosters economic growth.  In Africa, TVET is recognized as the most practical avenue for acquiring readily employable skills for the world of work. TVET is essential in many career opportunities such as assistants to healthcare professionals, agricultural technicians, manufacturing technicians and many more. At the global level, there is a huge gap between market demand and available skills. In countries such as the African ones, where the informal economy is dominating, this gap hinders economic growth, augments poverty and is a massive loss in human capital can serve not only African market, but also the global one particularly the countries that are characterized with declining birth rates.

Challenges:

  • TVET systems are embryonic in many countries creating a huge gap between available skills and the needs of the economy.
  • In many African countries, TVET is under the auspice of many ministries and the quality of both the content and the human resources is below satisfying.
