A triple threat of water-related crises is endangering the lives of 190 million children

According to a recent analysis by UNICEF, 190 million children in ten African countries face a convergence of three critical water-related threats: inadequate access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH); the spread of water-related diseases; and the impact of climate hazards. These challenges are particularly severe in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Somalia, making West and Central Africa one of the most water-insecure and climate-affected regions globally. The situation is exacerbated by conflicts and instability in many of these countries, further hindering children’s access to clean water and sanitation facilities. Urgent action is needed to address these issues and prevent unnecessary deaths, with a focus on providing sustainable solutions and investing in water, sanitation, and hygiene services. The upcoming UN 2023 Water Conference in New York provides an opportunity for world leaders to prioritize this crucial issue and accelerate progress towards ensuring universal access to safe water and sanitation. UNICEF calls for increased investment, strengthened climate resilience in the WASH sector, prioritization of vulnerable communities, and improved systems and coordination for water and sanitation services. By addressing these challenges, we can safeguard children’s health and create a sustainable future for generations to come.
